why silcock’s

Silcock’s Amusements today is run today by John Edward Silcock, with grown-up children Jensen, Tedi, Desiree and Sterling Silcock now actively involved in the company. As a family business, we respond quickly to customer’s wishes.

We get to know each of our clients on a personal level and therefore understand their individual wants and needs. We are friendly and accommodating but also professional to the end. We carry each job through with sincere passion and pride.

Book Silcock’s and you can be sure you’ve got four generations of fairground expertise behind you – from one of the biggest names in the business.

We have established a good relationship with many local authorities, corporate bodies and event organisers throughout Greater Manchester, Lancashire, Cheshire, Merseyside and beyond.

Clients include ICI, Bentley Motors, Seddon Construction, Libby’s Juices, University of Manchester, Lancaster University, Liverpool John Moores University, St Helens Borough Council, Warrington Borough Council and many more. We have also assisted several Round Table, Rotary Clubs and Lions organisations throughout the North West.

John Silcock and his family

From a candy floss barrow to a full scale fair, Silcock’s can bring the fun of the fair to your location with the minimum of time and fuss. We have a large stable of our own rides and attractions ready for hire, plus access to many more via trusted partners that we have been working with sometimes for several generations.

But where did it all begin? John Edward’s grandfather, Edward Silcock, was one of four brothers who once ran fairground game outside coal mines in Wigan to entertain miners each night on their way home. Lawrence, Edward, Herbert and Arthur Silcock then started travelling with rides just before the First World War.

The family really made its name, however, at Warrington Potato Market, operating a number of ‘Holiday at Home’ fairs during the War, at which the rides and attractions operated under ‘blackout’ covers. From then on, Silcock’s and Warrington have become intrinsically linked.

To this day, one of Silcock’s most well-known fairground presentations is the annual Daisy Nook Easter Fair in Failsworth near Oldham. The event’s popularity was such that LS Lowry was inspired to paint a picture of the holiday crowds there. This has been sold several times over for multi millions of pounds.

From early steam powered rides, to 1940s thrillers such as the Skid and today’s favourites such as the Waltzer, Dodgems and Freak Out, Silcock’s have always travelled first class amusements for young and old. And now we can bring them to you!
